Head of the Charles Regatta
Cambridge Boat Club
2 Gerry’s Landing
Cambridge, MA

The Head of the Charles Regatta began in 1965 when Harvard University sculling instructor Ernest Arlett proposed that Boston should have a “head of the river” race similar to those held in his native country, England. The idea was soon taken to heart by Cambridge Boat Club members, and the regatta began. Holding three mile races against the clock, the Head of the Charles has expanded immensely in the past forty years.
Taking place in late October, the two-day event attracts over 8,000 athletes each year with over 300,000 spectators. The Head of the Charles Regatta begins at the Boston University boathouse and proceeds approximately three miles upstream to Brighton. Children and adults of all ages are encouraged to participate, as the event includes all different types of rowing clubs such as varsity crew teams, club teams, alumni teams and more.
The next Head of the Charles Regatta will be held Saturday, October 20th and Sunday, October 21st, 2012.
