The Brattle is a repertory cinema that ran its first film in 1953 and is noted for its small group of enthusiastic staff. In 1953, Bryant Haliday and Cyrus Harvey Jr. kicked the theatre into gear with a screening of the German film, Der Hauptmann von Köpenick (The Captain from Köpenick). The two men later founded Janus Films with the intentions of distributing foreign films nationwide.
The Theatre still uses a classic rear-projection system, and continues to have a vigorous following for its classic, foreign, and edgy independent films. The theatre also shows first-run films and new releases of classic films, but its specialty is a repertory programming format that consists of films from a specific director, subject, or genre. These films are shown either throughout the course of a week, or on the same weekday throughout the month. The Brattle’s website provides visitors with a calendar of all showings.
Although there is no official university affiliation, The Brattle is a frequent venue for well-known speakers connected with Harvard. The theatre is located near Harvard Square in a below street-level courtyard on Brattle Street.
