Cambridge offers many events for its residents and visitors to participate in. From museum exhibits to farmers’ markets to special children’s events, there is sure to be something in our calendar for you to do. Musikgarten: Music and Movement Classes at NSM - Jan 3 2012 - 10:00 AM to Jan 5 2012 - 5:00 PM

Musikgarten offers instruction which is just right for each age level. Classes begin the week of January 3rd and run for 11 classes Class Fee: $230; includes 11 classes, songbook, cd and rhythm instrument or home activity packet—depending on class. Register online at www.newschoolofmusic.org or call NSM at 617-492-8105 Winter 2012 Schedule at the New School of Music: Family Music for Babies and Toddlers, newborn-3 years -Tuesdays at 10am OR Thursdays at 10am Together you’ll sing, chant, move, dance, listen, and play simple instruments, all activities that bridge the natural connection between music and movement . When you go home, you can continue the fun with a superb CD recorded by a fine children’s choir and outstanding instrumentalists. The parent guidebook along with the Musikgarten CD and an instrument or colorful scarf, will give you both hours of musical enjoyment at home. (child & caregiver attend class together) Date: Tuesdays or Thursdays;, January 3rd – March 22 Time: 10:00-10:45am Cycle of Seasons, ages 3-5 -Tuesdays at 3:30pm Developed to build attention and self-expression, activities include singing, chanting, moving, focused listening, musical games, exploring musical instruments, creative movement and storytelling. The Cycle of Seasons nurtures your growing child’s ability to use language and participate in dramatic play within a musical context. Fun family packets including wonderful music CDs are included for use at home to increase family involvement in the learning process. (child & caregiver attend class together). Date: Tuesday, January 3rd – March 20; no class Feb. 21 Time: 3:30-4:15pm Music Makers, ages 5-7 -Thursdays at 4:30pm Music Makers learning program that includes singing, creative as well as structured movement, playing instruments and ensemble work, ear training and guided listening. This developmentally sound approach to music literacy builds symbolic thinking, concentration, memory, and self expression; children also start to work with written musical patterns too. (this class is a drop-off class) Date: Thursday, January 5th – March 22; no class Feb. 23 Time: 4:30-5:15pm

Group Guitar, ages 10-14 - Jan 3 2012 - 5:30 PM to Jan 3 2012 - 6:30 PM

Group Guitar class is great for beginners ages 10-14. Learn everything you need to know to start playing guitar, including how to hold your guitar and pick, how to strum notes and read basic music. Follow that up with a few fun songs, and you’ll be singing along with family and friends in no time. This class is ideal for both acoustic and electric guitar players. Invite your friends, and start playing today! Date: Tuesdays, January 3-March 20, 2012 at 5:30-6:15 Tuition: $245.00 for 11 classes Ages: 10 – 14 years old Location: New School of Music, 25 Lowell Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 (we have parking!!) To Register: Online at www.newschoolofmusic.org or call the NSM office at 617-492-8105 Instructor — Chris Jenkins Chris attended Berklee College of Music as a performance major, receiving the Berklee Achievement Scholarship. He studied with Kenny Werner, Jon Damien and Hal Crook., and had masterclasses with Pat Martino, Mike Stern, Joe Lovano, and Pat Metheny. Chris has performed with Phil Wilson’s Rainbow Band, Jon Damien, Christopher Holliday, Billy Bowker, Rob Bargad, in many theater productions, and has had an annual gig at film star John Travolta’s New Year’s Eve party. With over 10 years of teaching experience Chris is a former faculty member at the Gainesville Guitar Academy and Academy of Music and Art in Gainesville, Florida, and current faculty at the Music & Arts Center in Peabody, Ma. Chris brings a jazz background to his teaching style with emphasis on ear training, theory, improvisation and their application to all styles of music. He is equally comfortable with the beginner to advanced of all ages and styles, including jazz, rock and blues, on both acoustic and electric. Many of his students have won scholarships to the nation’s top music programs.
